Some exciting new road upgrades were introduced to Karijini National Park in 2024, including the sealing of 41kms of gravel roads that will make the park accessible to more people than ever before. You can get to Karijini Eco Retreat on a beautiful sealed road. But, that’s not all. The new bitumen road continues all the way to Weano, Hancock, Joffre and Knox Gorges! Banjima Drive North, the gravel road that ran through the middle of the park, is also now sealed. It has taken 40km off the journey from Karijini Eco Retreat to Dales Gorge. No more bouncing over the corrugations to get to some of the most popular attractions in the park, including the ‘spider walk’, Kermits and Fern Pool. The only gravel roads in the park include:
– 6 km of Kalamina Road to access Kalamina Gorge.
– 3km of gravel to access the Mt Bruce Walk Trails and
– 55km of gravel to access Hamersley Gorge
These roads are graded several times during the year by the Shire and are normally in relatively good condition, however some sections can become quite corrugated at times, particularly during busy periods, rainfall or heavy traffic. For this reason we recommend coming in by 4WD vehicle, however many of our guests do travel in with standard vehicles and manage the trip very well. Please ensure that all belongings are secured, especially in caravans and trailers, prior to entering the National Park. If you are renting a vehicle please check the policy regarding unsealed roads with your rental company.
If there is severe weather in the area localised flooding can occur and the Karijini National Park rangers may sometimes close the park to all but 4WD vehicles, or close the park completely.
Please bear in mind when driving anywhere in the remote Pilbara it is a good idea to carry plenty of spares and a good supply of water. Always make sure when setting out on a big trip that someone knows where you are going, what time you are expected to return and which route you are planning to take!

This will advise of any park or site (gorges, lookouts, trails, etc) closures, road conditions and updates. The Emergency WA website: https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au/ advises of storms, floods, bushfire and traffic incident alerts and is also a good resource.The Department of Main Roads of Western Australia regularly updates its website with road conditions throughout the Pilbara (and WA in general) at https://travelmap.mainroads.wa.gov.au/Home/Map.
Are camp fires permitted?
What is the temperature like?
Karijini’s climate can best be described as tropical semi-desert. A highly variable, mainly summer rainfall of 250–350mm, often associated with thunderstorms and cyclones, is accompanied by temperatures frequently topping 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
The ideal times to visit the park are late autumn, the winter months and early spring. Winter days are warm and clear but nights can get extremely cold and sometimes frosty.
A guide to temperatures throughout the year is:
January: Average max of 39°C and min of 26°C
April: Average max of 33°C and min of 21°C
July: Average max of 24°C and min of 11°C
October: Average max of 35°C and min of 20°C
During the winter months of June, July and August, please ensure that you bring warm clothing (thermals, jumpers, jackets, beanies, gloves), particularly for children, and if camping bring extra bedding (blankets, warm sleeping bags), as at night the temperature can drop to zero degrees. For aded comfort, we have heated blankets in our Deluxe and Deluxe Plus Eco Tents.
Where can I get a National Park Pass?
Passes are available for purchase from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservations and Attractions website: https://shop.dbca.wa.gov.au/collections/park-passes, at any Visitor Centre, at entry points into the Karijini National Park (cash only).

Are airport transfers available?
There are a number of local tour operators who can quote you for bus transport/transfers, tours and activities during the peak season (April to October inclusive). Tour Operators do not offer services to the National Park during the low season (November to March inclusive).
Please note that the Karijini Eco Retreat do not currently offer transfers.
Where is the closest fuel station?
Where is the closest airport?
The closest airports are Paraburdoo Airport and Newman Airport.
Paraburdoo is approximately 130km from the Karijini Eco Retreat and takes around 1.5 hour’s drive. Qantas have regular, direct flights into and out of Paraburdoo Airport. The airport has full hire car facilities available through Avis, Hertz, Budget and Thrifty.
Newman is approximately 240km from the Karijini Eco Retreat and takes around 3 hour’s drive. Qantas and Virgin airlines operate from here and Avis, Hertz, Budget, Thrifty and Europcar hire cars are available.
There is also a light aircraft landing strip at the Karijini Visitors Centre. For further details please contact the Karijini Visitors Centre on +61 8 9189 8121.
Facilities
Are there any laundry facilities at the Karijini Eco Retreat?
No, we do not have guest laundry facilities inside the national park. The closest facilities are at Tom Price Tourist Park and these are chargeable. Please enquire directly with them to confirm.
Is there WiFi?
No, however in August 2019 Optus upgraded their infrastructure in the Karijini National Park and in July 2022 Telstra partially extended their coverage. Guests who use the Optus or Telstra networks now have 4G connectivity via their own mobile device at the Karijini Eco Retreat. Please note that coverage is limited and speeds are subject to network availability and the number of guests using the facility (these factors are not under our control).

During this period, our restaurant will be closed for its usual dinner service. Continental breakfast and packed picnic lunches will remain available for guests. BBQ bush kitchens will be available for guests to self-cater. Fridge and freezer space will be available. Please contact us for further details.
I would like to self-cater, what cooking facilities are available for me to use?
We have four basic, undercover bush kitchens scattered throughout the Karijini Eco Retreat for the convenience of our guests. These consist of a gas BBQ, sink, preparation area and seating. Please bring your own cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery as these are not provided. Guests may also bring their own gas BBQ and this is recommended for campers particularly during school holiday periods when we are at full capacity. Please note that there is no power in the ‘bush kitchens’ so kettles, toasters and microwaves are not provided.
Our kiosk has a small supply of food staples, cold drinks, ice-creams, lollies and takeaway tea and coffee (subject to availability). Ice is available at the kiosk.
Our fully licensed restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner and a simple takeaway option is available during peak periods. Packed picnic lunches and refills can be ordered at Reception the night prior to when they are required.

Understanding Our Aboriginal Ownership
When you choose to stay at Karijini Eco Retreat, you are contributing to the economic, social, and community development of Traditional Owners. Karijini Eco Retreat is owned by Gumala Enterprises & Development Pty Ltd, the business arm of the Gumala Trust, which is one of Australia’s largest Traditionally Owned organisations, serving the Banjima, Yinhawangka and Nyiyaparli people of the Pilbara region in Western Australia.
Your stay at the Karijini Eco Retreat helps fund programs and projects that make a meaningful difference in the lives of the Banjima, Yinhawangka, and Nyiyaparli people. Gumala’s mission is deeply rooted in supporting Indigenous communities through a range of impactful initiatives. These efforts include member programs and community projects that are designed to empower the Traditional Owners. For instance, Gumala allocates funds to education and training programs, cultural preservation projects, and community infrastructure investments. These initiatives not only enhance the well-being and self-sufficiency of Indigenous communities but also foster cultural heritage and create sustainable economic opportunities.
How do I get to Karijini Eco Retreat?
Karijini National Park is very much a self-drive destination and due to its remote location, guests mostly prefer to drive their own vehicle or a rental vehicle. When travelling through the park to get to the gorges, waterfalls and attractions, you will be driving on a mix of sealed and unsealed roads. We recommend 4WD/AWD vehicles.
Entry into the National Park and to the Karijini Eco Retreat via Banjima Drive (West) is now sealed. Bitumen road continues all the way to Weano, Hancock, Joffre and Knox Gorges! Banjima Drive North, the road that runs through the middle of the park, is also sealed. The only gravel roads in the park include:

If renting your vehicle, please ensure you check the terms and conditions directly with the rental company as they may have restrictions in place for driving on unsealed roads. Please ensure you select the correct vehicle category for the location.
For guests flying to Paraburdoo (Qantas flights), car hire is available from the airport through Avis, Hertz, Budget and Thrifty. Paraburdoo is approximately 130km from the Karijini Eco Retreat and takes around 1.5 hour’s drive.

Are children welcome at the property?
Yes, but it is important to be aware that we are situated in natural, rugged terrain that can pose severe dangers to unsupervised children. Closely supervise your children at all times and carefully read the safety information and signage while in the Karijini National Park. The walk trails are graded into “Classes” with Class 2 being the easiest.
We have a limited number of Eco Tents and Eco Cabins designed with young families in mind, these feature a king size bed for mum and dad and a bunk bed for up to two children. Due to the limited availability of these tents and cabins, early booking is advised especially during school holiday periods.
What should I bring?
· Electronic form of payment (credit/debit card) – no cash accepted at the Retreat
· Rubbish bags – there are no bins and no rubbish removal service at the Retreat or in the National Park, so you must take your rubbish with you when you leave
· Optus or Telstra enabled mobile phone or SIM card (currently only Optus and Telstra works at the Retreat)
· Portable phone charger or power bank
· Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
· Insect repellent
· Mozzie/fly head net
· Torch
· Long pants
· Closed in walking shoes or hiking boots
· Old runners, reef shoes or aqua socks for climbing over slippery rocks and swimming in the gorges
· Swimming attire
· Beach towel
· Waterproof backpack or bag for your camera/phone if hiking the gorges, creeks, waterfalls and waterholes
· Toiletries

· Camera, iPad, books, games, etc

Do I need to book in for the restaurant?
Dinner reservations are essential and should be made in advance of your arrival. Please call +61 8 9189 8013 or email reception@karijiniecoretreat.com.au to check availability and book a table.

Accommodation & Camping
Do any campsites have water?
No, there is no water connection for caravans/motorhomes and it is recommended that guests use the ablutions provided and arrive with full tanks if required.
Each camping loop at the Karijini Eco Retreat has shared ablutions with solar hot water showers, flushing toilets and basin facilities. Please note due to the use of solar power, we are unable to guarantee the provision of hot water as this is subject to weather conditions.
The camp loops do not have grey water or black water (sewage) disposal points for caravans or campervans.
Is there grey water disposal?
No, our camping loops do not offer any dump points, including grey water or black water (sewage) disposal. Shared ablution facilities—featuring showers, toilets, and basins—are provided in each camping loop for guest use.
Can I pre-select my actual campsite?
No, unfortunately pre-selection of specific campsites is not available at the Karijini Eco Retreat. Allocated site numbers will be confirmed to guests at the time of check-in and are not provided ahead of stay.
Do the Deluxe Eco Tents have air conditioning?
No, there is no air conditioning available in the Deluxe Eco Tents, but they are designed with canvas walls that can be unzipped and folded down to allow the natural breeze in, and to allow you to have a full view of your surroundings.
Can I request to be allocated near friends or family?
We will try our best to accommodate your request but please be aware we’re unable to guarantee an allocation due to other bookings and occupancy levels.
Do the Luxury Eco Tents have air conditioning?
Yes, the Luxury Eco Tents have solar powered individual air conditioning/heating and ceiling fans. They also have double sliding glass entry doors, large zip down windows and mesh screens to allow the natural breeze in if you prefer.
Do the showers have hot water?
The showers utilise a solar hot water system. Solar hot water temperature is supplied by the sun and can be affected by weather conditions.
Please note due to the use of solar power, we are unable to guarantee the provision of hot water as this is subject to weather conditions.
Is there rubbish disposal?
No, due to the vast size and remoteness of the Karijini National Park, there are no bins and no rubbish removal service at the Retreat or in the Park. Please take your rubbish with you on departure and dispose of responsibly. Leave nothing but your footprints!
We also take our own rubbish out of the Park, use sustainable and recycled materials, have removed plastics where possible, and have a commitment to the DBCA to limit the waste the Retreat produces.
There are no grey water or sewage disposal points at Karijini Eco Retreat. Limited facilities are available at Dales Campground and in Tom Price—please plan ahead.
Can I use my CPAP (Sleep Apnea) machine?
The Luxury Eco Tents have a power supply suitable for a CPAP (Sleep Apnea) machine.
We also have a limited number of Deluxe Eco Tents at the retreat where CPAP machines can be used. Please ensure that you mention this when the booking is made so our friendly staff can allocate you the correct tent that will accommodate the machine.
Please note that all other accommodation options have insufficient power for these machines and so are not suitable.
Do any campsites have power?
No, all of our campsites at the Karijini Eco Retreat are unpowered. Guests may bring their own generator which can be used in the camping loops between 2pm – 4pm daily. The closest powered sites can be found outside of the Karijini National Park at Tom Price.
Do the tents or cabins have refrigerators?
The Luxury Eco Tents have a mini-fridge. The other accommodation types have a limited power supply and so no refrigeration is available. Each Deluxe Eco Tent and Eco Cabin have an esky or cool box for keeping items cool. Guests staying in the Standard Eco Tents and Campsites should bring an esky or cool box if required. Bags of ice can be purchased at Reception.

Are tea & coffee making facilities available?
Yes, tea and coffee making facilities are available in the Luxury Eco Tents.
Complimentary tea and coffee is available at Reception for our Deluxe Eco Tent guests. A thermos flask with tea and coffee supplies are also provided in each Deluxe Eco Tent, and hot water is available at Reception during opening hours.
Guests in all other accommodation types and campsite guests may purchase tea and coffee at Reception.
Can I bring my own electrical appliances to the Karijini Eco Retreat?
Power for the Karijini Eco Retreat is primarily provided by the sun. Two large banks of solar panels charge a series of batteries to provide the majority of power, diesel generators provide backup power when required.
The Luxury Eco Tents have solar powered individual air conditioning/heating, ceiling fan, lights and power points. They also come with a mini-fridge, kettle and hairdryer.
The Deluxe Eco Tents have only just enough power for lighting and for low wattage electrical appliances (such as recharging a camera battery, mobile phone or iPad). These are equipped with a 1.5 amp breaker switch, appliances such as hairdryers, portable fridges, irons, toasters and kettles will trip the breaker. A small number of Deluxe Eco Tents have power for CPAP (Sleep Apnea) machines, please enquire.
The Eco Cabins have reading lights and 12 volt electricity only. Adapters are required – socket compatible with a car cigarette lighter charger.
The Campsites and Standard Eco Tents are unpowered.
This power limit is in place to conserve energy, due to the Karijini Eco Retreat primarily running on solar power.
Can I use my own generator?
Yes, generators are welcome to be used in the camping loops between 2pm – 4pm daily. These limited hours are in place to ensure the comfort and quiet enjoyment of all guests.
How many vehicles/people can stay on one campsite?
The maximum occupancy per campsite is 1 vehicle (plus tent, trailer or caravan) and up to 6 people. All vehicles must be parked on a designated campsite and the number of sites required will usually be dependant upon how many vehicles you are bringing in to the park. Parking more than one car on a site is not possible.
Is the water drinkable?
Yes, the water from the taps at the Karijini Eco Retreat is drinkable, however we ask that you use it sparingly by limiting your showers and not washing your vehicles. Water in our remote location is a precious resource that needs to be conserved, and as we have water shortages at the Retreat, we encourage guests to bring their own water if possible, especially when camping.
Bottled water is also available for purchase from our kiosk.
Please note that water from sources outside of the Karijini Eco Retreat are not managed or monitored by ourselves, and therefore not drinkable. This includes the water tank near the junction of Weano Road and Banjima Drive.
Is linen provided?
Yes, the Luxury Eco Tents, Deluxe Eco Tents, Standard Eco Tents and Eco Cabins come complete with linen and towels. The towels are for bathroom use only and if you would like to swim in the gorges, please bring your own beach towel.
During the winter months (June, July, August) guests are reminded that night time temperatures can drop to zero degrees and below. We recommend that you bring thermals and warm clothing for bed time, particularly if travelling with children or infants.
Do the Eco Cabins have power?
The Eco Cabins have reading lights and 12 volt electricity only. Adapters are required – socket compatible with a car cigarette lighter charger.

Do the Eco Cabins have secure facilities?
Yes, the Eco Cabins have individual lockers if you require a place to secure any valuables, padlocks are available to purchase from reception.
