Karijini National Park Access Information & Park Alert Notices
For information on park access, road conditions and closures within the Karijini National Park, please visit https://alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au/. This will advise of any park or site (gorges, lookouts, trails, etc) closures, road conditions and updates. The Emergency WA website: https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au/ advises of storms, floods, bushfire and traffic incident alerts and is also a good resource. The Department of Main Roads of Western Australia regularly updates its website with road conditions throughout the Pilbara (and WA in general) at https://travelmap.mainroads.wa.gov.au/Home/Map.
Karijini National Park Entry Fees
An entry fee or $15 per vehicle ($8 for concessions) applies to all national parks including
Park Passes are available for purchase at any entry points to the park or at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
Entry fees apply to all National Parks, including Karijini, and are not included in any accommodation rates or packages.
Driving & Roads
41 km of key roads throughout Karijini National Park were sealed in 2024. This means you can now easily reach the Eco Retreat and explore Weano, Hancock, Joffre, Knox and Dales Gorges all via smooth bitumen roads. The only remaining unsealed roads in the park are:
- 6 km to Kalamina Gorge
- 3 km to the Mt Bruce Walk Trails
- 55 km to Hamersley Gorge
While these main areas are accessible by 2WD, we still recommend 4WD/AWD vehicles for safety, as you’re still in the rugged outback.
These roads are graded several times during the year by the Shire and are normally in relatively good condition, however some sections can become quite corrugated at times, particularly during busy periods, rainfall or heavy traffic. Please ensure that all belongings are secured, especially in caravans and trailers, prior to entering the National Park.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) reserves the right to restrict access or close roads, gorges, lookouts and hiking trails within the National Park if there are adverse weather conditions or for safety reasons.
For your own convenience and safety, it is advisable that you check all weather and road conditions before your arrival. You may also call the Karijini Eco Retreat to check conditions and access on (08) 9189 8013.
If you intend to visit Kalamina Gorge, Mt Bruce, or Hamersley Gorge, please ensure when renting vehicles that you check directly with the rental company that their intended vehicle can be taken onto unsealed (gravel) roads prior to making a reservation.
Weather
Winter (June to August): The winter months average about 25°C during the day which is ideal for hiking the gorges and exploring the park, but can drop to 0°C at night. Guests staying in the Karijini National Park during the winter months are advised to bring warm clothing (thermals, jumpers, jackets, beanies, gloves), and if camping bring extra bedding (blankets, warm sleeping bags), particularly for the night time as temperatures can drop to zero degrees during this period.
Summer (December to February): Temperatures at Karijini during this period can reach in excess of 40°C on a daily basis. Our new Luxury Eco Tents have solar powered air conditioning but the rest of our accommodation is not air-conditioned. Deluxe and Deluxe Plus Eco Tents have a pedestal fan and natural ventilation only.
Cyclone Season (November to April): Please be aware and check weather and road conditions, park alerts including closures, and especially cyclone season safety if travelling to Australia’s north, and plan your visit carefully. Cyclones and inclement weather can occur in Australia’s north between November and April. If your booking is between the months of November and April, please ensure that you are aware of any potential cyclones in the area and any Park Alerts before leaving home. Decisions made to continue your travel to the Karijini Eco Retreat/Karijini National Park during the risk of a potential cyclone will be taken into consideration when refunds are issued.
